VWB Volunteers
VWB Volunteers are those already registered as RTA Ambassadors, who feel they have something more to contribute to the development of responsible tourism. They would be both willing and available to take on assignments with VWB (The Volunteers Without Borders Foundation) in the available destinations of their choice.
The following information covers the tasks you would undertake on assignments for VWB. These tasks are all related to the RTA projects:
-
Development and Promotion - Of tourist routes designed as excursions from or between destinations, and the network of micro and small responsibly operated RTA Business Partners, established along those routes.
-
The Creation of Marketing Materials - A multi-page interactive 'online profiles for upload to the RTA’s non-commission-based search, booking, and support platform. It is designed to level the playing field for micro and small, responsibly operated tourism businesses, by ensuring them an equitable share of tourism revenues, and a positive impact on their local visitor-based economies.
-
Business Skills Training - Providing a range of workshops for RTA Business Partners. These are designed to improve service standards, responsible tourism best practices, financial and operations reporting, and management.
-
Non-tourism Reliant 2nd Revenue Streams - The introduction of non-tourism reliant 2nd revenue streams, and their supply chains, selected to provide alternative income and risk management for these Business Partners and others in the local visitor-based economy.
Outside of the RTA related projects, VWB works in education, agroforestry, small scale sustainable agriculture projects in schools and rural communities and has numerous options for groups wanting CS or CSR projects. See: www.volunteers-without-borders.org
The RTA Local Agent in each destination is also the VWB representative and can advise you of the volunteer opportunities available, for paying individuals and groups, or in some cases for suitably qualified individuals with specialised expertise, who can be subsidised by RTA Member contributions.
Business Partners seeking volunteer assistance are encouraged to make their requests through their Local Agent.
Local Agents are also eligible to receive donor funding from VWB (where available) to help subsidise their ‘volunteer activities’ related to the development and skills training of RTA Business Partners.
RTA Ambassadors interested in the Volunteer role are invited to apply for a training course (minimum 4 weeks) with VWB (initially) in Chiang Mai Thailand. On passing that course, the RTA Local Agent will issue you with a numbered Volunteer certificate which must be entered into your RTA Ambassador profile.
Your profile will remain the same, but you would then add detail of your volunteer credentials and experiences to the MY ASSIGNMENTS page on your profile.

Are You a Good Fit for the Role? |
If you volunteer with VWB you must be a good fit for our workplace culture. We do not see our work as 'giving back' per se, but as a collaboration with local entrepreneurs to address the many serious problems facing the tourism industry.
Most of these problems are derived from or are exacerbated by the lack of opportunity and equitable share in the rewards of tourism.
In volunteering, fully expect to learn at least as much as you contribute, using the experience you gain to inform your world view and help shape the future for all those who follow.

|
Selection for Training |
Before being accepted as a VWB volunteer on assignment for the RTA - you would undergo a candidate selection process:
-
Resume - Submit your resume to info@track-of-the-tiger.com - subject RTA Local Agent Training.
-
Covering Letter - Submit a covering letter stating why you think you are a good fit for the role.
-
Skills & Interests - Explain what skills /interests you have that would make you a valuable member of a VWB task force (2-4 people.)
Make sure you are as informed as possible on the places you will undertake training in, learning what you can of their culture, customs, and lifestyle, to give and gain respect. Most RTA Local Agents will have developed or had access to literature and other materials to help you in this regard.
You must follow your own set of responsible travel best practices, leading by example. Review the Forums & Resources page for further guidance.
Once you have been accepted, assignments have been agreed, and dates (normally a minimum period of 4-weeks have been agreed) do what you can to familiarise yourself with the materials you will be using.

|
Being a Responsible Tourist |
You must follow your own set of responsible travel practices. These should focus on:
-
Respecting local culture
-
Conserving wildlife
-
Protecting the environment
-
Empowering the RTA businesses you visit.
Use the RTA Best Practices Database provided on your online profile to keep you on track.
|
Promoting the RTA at Home |
The commission-based traditional model for tourism disenfranchises many existing and potential tourism SMEs, in all countries. Give some thought to those in your own 'local visitor-based economies' many of whom would benefit from representation under the RTA business model. Consider introducing them to it, even assisting them to join where you can.
